Learning all About Me and Teddy Bears

Our themes typically match our letter of the week. Our first 2 weeks were M and T. We talk about "Me" with m and " Teddy Bears" with t. For some reason I didn't take many pictures???? I am not sure what I was thinking. Below are pictures of us looking in mirrors. Each child looks at his or her eye color and we complete a pie graph using our eye color. My sweet friend Suzan Estes started that and we love learning about the different types of graphs during this unit. We also use the mirrors to draw a picture of our face and head and to graph our hair color.

This is a reader that I made for the writing center. It contains sight words and words from the -at family. Each child rolls the color die, writes the color word on the line, then colors the picture to match. After it is completed, each child reads his or her book to a partner.

We explored magnets and magnifying glasses in the science center.
This is a picture of our number charts we made to go along with numbers 1-5. I want them to realize and understand that each number is more than a symbol. These are different ways to show that number.
We also write-the-room during center time. Each child clips a paper to a clip board and walks around the room looking for sight words or other words that go along with our letter or theme. These are our "me" kids with sight words. Each child writes the word on the line beside the girl or boy and colors the person to match.

Here are some math stations I made to go along with our theme. Each child rolls a set die and bingo dots the correct number on the paper. The other sheet is count and stamp.

This is a set and number match. One page has number words on it and the other has different sets.

We are AB pattern experts! Here is an AB pattern page I made for them to practice independently.

This math activity is a little more difficult. There are 6 different counting cards and they are different colors. The kiddos count the items on the card, write the number, and color it the correct color. After this part is completed, they take that information and transfer it to another page. There they write the color word and number in the sentence. For example, " I see 3 orange friends. They color the friend to match, then complete a 10's frame to show that number.

I introduced measuring with Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. They seems to enjoy it so we are still measuring in math stations.
I created this so that the kids can start thinking about addition. They empty a cup containing 5 2-color dots. They record their work on the page. After coloring the dots to match, they write the correct number with the color and write which color was more.

This was the cutest thing ever! Our Reading Coach wrote a story about a baby boo-boo pumpkin and read it to all 26 classes. It was a great story and each class got a  baby boo-boo pumpkin of our own!!! We had to take care of it and name it.

Here I am with our brand new baby boo-boo pumpkin. It was a BOY!!!

Our birth certificate.

I made the same math stations but changed the theme. I want them to feel confident and be able to do work independently. I "tweak" it just a bit so that there is some challenge.

This week they had to stamp the number after counting but they also had to write the number word.

Math Workjobs. This idea comes from the book Workjobs by: Mary Baratta-Lorton.
It is an oldie but a goodie! The kiddos have to show 1 on every mat before moving on to 2. It's amazing how often they can get 5 correct but not the other 3 mats. Each child must have the correct number of items on each mat before passing off that number. They love it!!!!

Teddy Bears! We read Bears in the Night by: Stan and Jan Berenstain. The book is about positional words. After reading, we practice using the words.

This was a special treat. We read Otis . Mrs. Landers had "Otis" come visit our school. The kids were so excited!!! She read the story to us and then we had our picture made with him. She also had games set up to play. We played the same games as Otis and his friend!!!!
