Colors

I LOVE learning about colors! I always begin with red, blue, and yellow because those are the three primary colors. That is one of our science standards. We learn about green after the primary colors. I introduce the problem: we have NO green paint in the building. We can't paint or do anything fun on green day. It is amazing how quickly they become problem solvers. Who wants to sit and use crayons all day?!? There is always at least one child that recommends mixing colors. I set out the 3 colors we have: red, blue, and yellow. Each child chooses 2 colors to mix. This is the easiest and most fun way to introduce secondary colors in my opinion. Is it messy? Yes! Is it awesome seeing all the smiles as they discover new colors? ABSOLUTELY!!!! I can guarantee that they will not forget how to make other colors. The pictures below show the kiddos making the Big, Wide-Mouthed Frog and choosing colors to find out what they make.

Now we know that yellow and blue make green. We mix them together to make our green hand prints for Go Away Big, Green Monster.

We colored Brown Bear characters from memory and then sorted skittles and M&Ms onto the correct color.

Mixing red and blue to make purple. We used this to make our purses for Lily's Purple Plastic Purse.
